Timber framed Roof Lantern manufactured by Medina Joinery

Our timber framed Roof Lantern is made from either an engineered hardwood such as Red Grandis or Sapele, or a other sustainable hardwoods depending on the section size and availability at the time of ordering.

The other option is European Oak. This is used in the event you are looking for a natural oak lantern with a coating of natural Osmo UV Resistant oil to enhance the grain and colour of the timber.

Another choice is Accoya which is modified timber in which a process called acetylation, a cutting-edge patented technology, enables it to resist rot, defy the elements and stay strong for decades. Guaranteed by Accoya for 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground or freshwater, its performance and properties are remarkable. Have a look at the Accoya website for more information.

What sizes can I have a timber framed roof lantern FAQ?

You can have any size lantern you would like. Although we do have a list of standard sizes that meet most requirements and these can be more economical. The smallest size we would recommend would be 900 x 900mm as the area of glass at this size is getting quite small due to the dimensions of the timber frame. On a rectangular lantern the length on the ridge, or center section is worked out be taking the overall width from the length. If this is too short it can make the lantern look a little strange, so if in doubt, contact us and we can send you a drawing for you to approve.

What colour options are there?

There are two elements to the timber framed roof lantern. The main wooden frame and the external aluminum capping that secures the double glazed units and make it all water tight. The timber can be painted any colour you would like, although there is an additional cost. We have a library of colours from the standard colour ranges such as RAL, Farrow and Ball, Dulux, and many more so just contact us with your requirements. The external aluminum capping comes in white or brown as standard. We can supply it in other colours, however it is powder coated so the options are not quite as wide but we can usually meet your requirements.

Who will fit the timber framed Roof Lantern?

Our lanterns are manufactured in such a way that they are relatively easy to install. The main wooden section will be delivered to site as a completed item up to a size of about 3.5 x 2m, with the glass units and aluminum capping all pre-cut to length and ready to simply fit into place and fix down. With larger lanterns we make them in a flat pack form with all items cut to size and painted ready to screw back together. We do offer an installation service. How should the flat roof be finished to enable the lantern to be fitted?

We recommend a minimum up stand of 150mm from the external finished flat roof level. The lantern can be fitted onto any up stand to a maximum width of 130mm. We can accommodate a wider upstand if you need to allow for a vented roof etc., but you will need to let us know so we can adjust our standard design.

What type of glass is on the lantern and what options do I have?

The standard roof lantern comes with a double glazed units made up of two layers of 4mm toughened glass with a softcoat to the inner layer. The cavity is filled with argon gas to improve the U value and they are fitted with warm edge spacer bars. This gives a center pane U value of 1.2W/m2. We can offer solar control and self-cleaning glass, so contact us to discuss the options and we can sort out a quotation.

Can I have vertical windows around the side of the lantern?

Yes we can supply all our lanterns with sidelight window. These can be any height from 400mm to 1000mm and can be fitted with top hung opening casements that work with a screwjack opener or can be motorized.

Is it possible to have opening windows in a timber framed roof lantern?

We can supply aluminum opening vents to fit between the rafters and can be operated either with a screwjack and crank handle or be fitted with a motor. There is also an option to have a climate control system that will close the vent if it rains.

How should we work out the size of roof lantern we need?

The most important thing with a roof lantern when fitted, is there is a nice even margin all the way round the internal ceiling aperture when plastered. With this in mind we always work on the dimensions for the lantern to be taken from the finished internal width and length of the aperture that is formed in the ceiling. It is not really a problem how much the lantern overhangs the upstand on the outside, but it is important that it lines up correctly with the inside. The internal edge of the lantern is finished with an ovolo detail and overhangs by 22mm.

What type of external finishes are available?

The standard timber framed Roof Lantern comes with white (RAL 9010) powder coated aluminum capping, or brown (RAL 8040) in the event you are having an oak lantern. The ridge section is an extruded aluminum profile with half round casting at each end. We can also supply finials to be fitted to each end of the ridge in the form of a 80mm or 125mm diameter ball or decorative spike.

In the event you are looking for a lantern in a conservation area or for a listed property we can supply a lead ridge which can be dressed down over the glass and capping after installation. We would recommend the use of a patination oil to ensure the lead doesn’t stain the glass over time.

How does the roof lantern get delivered?

The timber section of the lantern is supplied fully finished and assembled with roof lanterns up to 3.5 x 2.0m. For larger lanterns we can deliver them in a flat packed form ready to simply screw back together.

If access is a problem then we can supply any size timber framed roof lantern as a flat pack. The lantern is very straight forward to assemble with a connector bolt at each corner of the main frame to ensure tight square joints (Click here for further information on roof lantern assembly) . Then the rafters are fixed into place along with the hips and ridge. After this you just need to apply the gasket and lay the double glazed units in place. The aluminum is supplied cut to length with all fixings ready to fix into place.

Design

The gable end design can have an advantage over the hipped end lantern where you end up with an appature close to being a square, this has the effect of giving a very short ridge if a hipped design is used. This is because with a hipped lantern they are set at 45% to ensure the same angles are maintained.

They are made with a hardwood timber (although you can choose whichever timber you require) and capped externally in a  proprietary aluminium extrusions.

Glazing

Our timber Gable End Roof Lanterns are supplied with double glazed units and made up using an inside pane of 4mm toughened glass with a coating of Planitherm, with a 16mm argon fitted cavity, then and outer layer of 4mm toughened glass. This unit will give a centre pane U value of 1.1 and will give you added security and is guaranteed for 10 years.

Vents

Units can incorporate opening vents, operated manually or by 24 or 230V electric actuators, for comfort or ventilation.

Finish

Each Roof Lantern can be painted to any colour you require. Medina Joinery will spray paint them in our spray booth in our workshop in Hayling Island.

Manufacture

They are all manufactured in our workshop on Hayling Island, Hampshire and we deliver to anywhere in mainland UK.

Installation

Our rooflights are supplied either in component form and installed on site, or fully assembled without the glass, depending on there size and site access.

Bring sunshine in your room with a timber Roof Light

Many buildings suffer from low levels of daylight so a timber Roof Light would be perfect to open up your room and bring in the sunshine. They are fantastic for extensions, Orangeries or even a Roof light to brighten up your kitchen. So if you have a flat roof this would be ideal.

We hand build our timber Roof Lights from a number of timber types, and supply it in a range of finishes. They are supplied primed or fully finished in white as standard, or supplied in any colour from a  RAL to Farrow and Ball etc. Just contact us with your preferred colour and we will confirm a match and any additional costs. The Roof Light can also be supplied in Oak with an oiled finish.

Double glazing options:

All our timber Roof Lights are fitted with high performance double glazed units. Our double glazed units are supplied with toughened glass as standard. The inner pane has a coating of Planitherm which is a special coating to reflect heat that you generate back into your home, rather than allowing it to escape through your windows. This coating also allows free heat from natural daylight to pass through the glass giving you solar gain, warming the room for free and saving you money. The gap between the two layers of glass prevents condensation within the unit.

This unit will give a U value of 1.4 and will give you added security and is guaranteed of 10 years.

But we also offer other options of glass products:

Solar Control and Self Cleaning: We supply double glazed units with the outer pane made from Pilkington Active Neutral which has a slight but neutral tint. This is also available with a blue, grey or bronze tint to further reduce solar glare if required.

Acoustic Glass: If noise is an issue then we can supply units with the outer layer made from 6.4mm laminated glass, this cuts down noise transmission due to the two layers of glass being made of dissimilar materials which has the effect of braking up the sound waves. We can offer ‘Acoustic Glass’ if required.

Triple Glazed Units: We can supply triple glazed units if required, please contact us for more details.

Solar Controlled Glass: We can also offer the option of solar controlled glass. For this we offer Pilkington Activ™ Blue which is an on-line coated body-tinted, self-cleaning and medium performance solar control glass in an attractive blue colour. Its surface self-cleaning coating has photo-catalytic and hydrophilic properties. The unique blue colour helps to keep internal temperatures cool whilst still maintaining excellent light transmittance, low light reflection and high energy absorption.

Opening Vents

Opening vents are an option. Aluminum opening vents with either manual or motorized options can be supplied in a range of RAL colours to match the external capping. Aluminum thermal clad composite system, external drainage system, precise mechanical sealed mitered joints and concealed pressure cleats. Full length integral hinge system, easy to remove for onsite access. Fully fabricated with no onsite fabrication required.
